In order to provide the Consultant abroad with all the information necessary to come to a balanced judgement of your specific health problem all information has to be gathered and arranged in a set format. To do so we will provide a questionnaire. This questionnaire will not only address your specific health problem but will also address general issues to estimate your general wellbeing and additional provisions necessary to make the procedure go smoothly.
Every few weeks we will organise an informal meeting to familiarise you and your accompanying person with the things that lie ahead. We will discuss travel arrangements, accommodation and routine surrounding the medical procedure.
Well in advance we will certify that all travel arrangements are correct, transport between Airport, Hotel and Hospital are complying with one and other. The arrangement for the accompanying person are also taken into account.
As soon as you have landed in Holland and got you bearings right we will have a consultation with your operating consultant, with the anaesthesist and the physiotherapist. After the consultant and Anaesthesist have assessed you, the final go / no go will be given.
Surgery will be planned for the following day. Language will be no problem. All staff speak English and are familiar with Irish people coming over to have surgery done.
After surgery you will spend some time in the recovery room and depending on the procedure you will stay overnight at the ward specially dedicated for Orthopedic surgery. The length of stay depends on the progress made and is monitored in close harmony with the physiotherapist. Once it is safe to act on your own, you will be discharged. The Hotel accommodation where your accompanying person is staying will be you address for the next few days.
During this period a nurse will visit you frequently to inspect the wound and the physio will visit to do the necessary exercises and judge if the exercises done up to now have been effective.
Before returning home you will be seen by you consultant for any last questions.
The journey home will be similar to the one coming over. If necessary some special assistance will be available at the airport.
Once back on Irish soil you will be escorted home by your family or friends. After 14 days, if needed, staples are removed by your General Practitioner. We will be in contact with you after a few weeks to inform how you are progressing.
